What is Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s disease refers to the formation of hard plaque or scar tissue in the penis. The scar tissue typically grows inside in the tunica albuginea membrane. It often forms on the top or bottom side of the penis causing curved and painful erections. Pain may also be present without an erection. Many men with Peyronie’s disease experience a shortening of their penis’ length and troubling attaining and maintaining erections.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Men often seek the advice of a doctor when the curvature of the penis is very pronounced or when they experience pain. In some cases Peyronie’s disease will disappear on its own, or the pain will ease over time. For others, treatment is a vital step in seeing any improvement. Doctors will perform a physical exam of the penis, looking for signs of the disease to make an official diagnosis.
